In the hometown of Xiuguluan River, the water quality is pure and sweet.
The warm sunlight shines on the Hualien-Taitung Valley, blessed with unique natural conditions, and the farmers' selfless dedication. Achieving the bountiful golden harvest on the fertile land of the valley is the honor and pride of being a resident of Fuli.
Located at the southern end of Hualien County, Taiwan, Fuli Township boasts an excellent climate and environment suitable for the growth of rice and various crops. The farmers' hard work has yielded the renowned "Kaohsiung No. 139" rice variety. The Fuli Township Farmers' Association, which assists local farmers in production, sales, and training, has established the "Fuli Fuli" brand to promote high-quality local agricultural products to Taiwan and the world. They hope to share the agricultural essence from the secret valley with all consumers through a variety of high-quality agricultural products.
The Varieties and Quality Characteristics of Fuli Rice in Taiwan
Taiwan belongs to a subtropical climate and is one of the warmest regions in the world for producing Japanese-style rice. After nearly a hundred years of efforts by Chinese and Japanese breeders, over 20 varieties of Japanese-style rice that integrate Taiwan's climate and soil have been developed, known as "high-quality rice varieties." These varieties are on par with renowned Japanese rice in terms of taste and also possess fragrance, chewiness, and softness. The Fuli area is most favored by consumers and Japanese residents in Taiwan for its two rice varieties: Kaohsiung No. 139 and Yichuan Fragrant Rice.
For the farmers of Fuli Township, the Kaohsiung No. 139 rice variety is a special child. The Kaohsiung No. 139 takes longer to go from flowering to maturity compared to other varieties, and its cultivation area is also limited. Even the appearance of the grains, which have more white belly, is not as visually appealing as other varieties, often putting it at a disadvantage in competitions. Fortunately, nature is always fair. The unique climatic conditions of Fuli Township and the farmers' passion for the land have allowed Kaohsiung No. 139 to fully showcase its advantages here. The rice produced is large, plump, with excellent transparency, luster, chewiness, bite, and sweetness, making it a top choice. Kaohsiung No. 139 and Fuli Township are like a match made in heaven, each finding the perfect partner in the other! The "Fuli Rice" produced by the Fuli Township Farmers' Association, through the concerted efforts of the farmers and the meticulous quality control of the association, has gradually gained a reputation. It has even made its way onto the international stage, impressing even the most discerning Japanese rice connoisseurs, who nicknamed it "Ugly Beauty." This has become the greatest pride of the people of Fuli, creating the esteemed reputation of "Fuli Rice" in Taiwan.
In Fuli Township, nurtured by warm sunshine, pure sweet water, and fertile valley soil, the Tainung No. 71 rice variety, which emits a unique taro aroma when cooked, is a hybrid of the Japanese rice variety "Kinkou" and the local Taiwanese variety "Taikeng No. 4." It has a moderate plant height, an excellent plant type, and medium to long-lasting resistance to most pests and diseases, making it suitable for Taiwan's second cropping season. Its grains are short, round, and plump, with a translucent appearance and excellent stickiness, making it suitable for the whole family to enjoy together. It is currently the most popular variety in Taiwan.
